Buddha Treasury Sutra, Vol. 1

Buddha Treasury Sutra, Vol. 1

“Śāriputra said to the Buddha, ‘World-Honored One! Each time I am in a retreat, I ponder, ‘The World-Honored One uses terms to speak of the Dharma indescribable by terms, and uses language to speak of the Dharma indescribable by language.’ Thinking of this brings forth the thought of rarity.’”

The Buddha told Śāriputra, “Indeed, indeed! This is rare, and such rarity is unparalleled. This shows the Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodi of all Buddhas. Śāriputra! You are like a skillful artist who draws on the void to manifest various forms. What do you think? Is this artist a rarity?’”

“A rarity indeed, World-Honored One!”

“Śāriputra! The Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi attained by the Tathagata teaches that all dharmas are neither arising nor ceasing, signless, and unconditioned. If people can believe and understand this, it is doubly rare. Why is this so? This Dharma indescribable by terms has no thought, no gain, and does not cultivate; it is inconceivable and does not rely on the mind. It has no conceptual elaborations and cannot be relied upon by conceptual elaborations.”

Remark:

The Buddha established three rounds of dharma transmission in order to implicitly and explicitly teach disciples where the true Mind is, along with its various contents. The objective is to allow disciples to practice in the right sequence according to their disposition, capacity, and causes and conditions, so as to attain the Three-vehicle Bodhi and eventually realize the single Buddha Vehicle.

This is why the Buddha taught in the Heart Sutra: “The form dharma is not the true Self, and the true Self is not form dharma. On the other hand, form dharma is not different from the true Self, and the true Self is also not different from form dharma either.” Hence, if we do not have proper guidance from a truly enlightened mentor, we will find the teachings difficult to understand.
