Significance of Supportive Dharma in the Three-Vehicle Bodhi

Buddhist cultivation is nothing more than striving to realize true liberation and to attain the Great Bodhi. However, before realizing true liberation, we first need to learn and practice the corresponding Supportive Dharma (次法) as our resources (Ssaṃbhāra;資糧). Therefore, it is crucial for all Buddhist learners to establish the correct knowledge and insight of the Supportive Dharma. Accordingly, it is routinary for all Buddhas to gradually impart to sentient beings their teaching of Supportive Dharma on the principle of giving, on the principle of precept observance, on the principle of rebirth in the heavenly realms, on the impure nature of our desires, on the taints of taking rebirth in the upper realms, and on the supremacy of going forth into liberation.

Suppose all Buddhist followers can joyfully believe and accept the teachings of Supportive Dharma. In that case, all Buddhas will then expound on the Four Noble Truths of suffering, origination, cessation, and path to cessation so that all Buddhist followers can practice and embrace these. Thus, if we wish to realize the nirvana of the Path to Liberation and the Path to Buddhahood, we should regard the practice of the Supportive Dharma as our top priority. Only then can the virtues and conditions of attaining fruition in the Path of Liberation and even the Path of Buddhahood ripen.
