Every individual possesses past lifetimes
as numerous as the sands of the Ganges and habitual cultivation tendencies that
are built up over many past lives.
Whether one is inclined to complete the Hinayana path of liberation or the Mahayana path toward Buddhahood, the practice of observation and contemplation are equally essential. However, cultivation on the Hinayana will not benefit other beings when one enters nirvana to end suffering in the three realms.
On the other hand, one can gradually lessen sufferings in the three realms and can help other beings in countless future lifetimes when one cultivates Mahayana toward Buddhahood. One of the merits of benefiting others is that one can choose his/her countless rebirths rather than no choice at all as the Hinayanist.
