“At
the time, that non-Buddhist stood up and joined palms politely requested: ‘I
heard Gautama discourse the dharma of selflessness. I am displeased at heart
and become doubtful, and I won’t be contented to accept it without having a place
to call home. Sramana Gautama, how can this physical body arise from cause and
condition if there is no self? I can see in Gautama with the characteristics of supernatural
powers, being the top amongst celestial beings, complete with dignified
virtues, and bringing joy to all. Gautama even expounded that all dharmas are
Tathagata to those sons of Heaven of Extensive Fruition [Bṛhatphala]. Why
would Gautama elucidate on the notion of selflessness then?”
