Śūraṅgama Sutra, Vol. 1

“Even if one maintained inner quiescence after having extinguished all seeing, hearing, feeling, and cognizing, such a state of quiescence would still be within the scope of image processing, which consists of the differentiation of mental objects.”

Śūraṅgama Sutra, Vol. 1

《楞嚴經》卷1:「縱滅一切見聞覺知,內守幽閑,猶為法塵分別影事,」

Remark:

According to the quoted sutra, even if a practitioner has attained the ninth graded concentration, the highest state of meditative absorption within the three realms of existence - samadhi on neither perception nor non-perception (S: naivasaṃjñāna-asaṃjña-āyatana), he will still be unable to become a liberated arhat. The states of Four Formless Absorptions still belong to the contaminated dharma, which has not transcended the samadhi (mental concentrationstate of the perceptive mind within the three realms. These states fit in the category of consciousness skandha” of the perceptive mind.

The truth is, transcending the stream of transmigration relies on the transmundane wisdom rather than on meditation. Practitioners must first rid themselves of the notion that the perceptive mind or mental consciousness is permanent. Such is referred to as the wisdom of “eliminating self-view.” It is different from the contemporary people’s belief that liberation is attained through the state of meditative absorption.
