“All Buddhas, Tathagatas are embodied with the entity of great compassion.Because of sentient beings, great compassion arises.Because of great compassion, bodhichitta arises.Because of bodhichitta, one attains the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment"
Avatamsaka Sutra, Vol. 40
「諸佛如來以大悲心而為體故,
因於眾生而起大悲,
因於大悲生菩提心,
因菩提心成等正覺。」
《大方廣佛華嚴經》卷40
Remarks:
Bodhisattvas must go through the 52 cultivation stages for more than three incalculable eons to fully possess the virtues, merits, and wisdom required for attaining Buddhahood. When bodhisattvas initially take refuge in the Three Jewels and make the Four Great Vows, they aspire to achieve the bodhichitta and practice the bodhisattva way. The Four Great Vows are the universal vows made by all Buddhas and bodhisattvas. One of these vows is “however innumerable sentient beings may be, I vow to save them all.” This is the foremost task of a bodhisattva: to help liberate countless sentient beings. Without such practice to adorn one’s own pure land, one will have no Buddha land in the future and cannot achieve Buddhahood.
How does one adorn the Buddha land? What is there to adorn in the
pure land? Adorning your Buddha land is adorning your own Tathagata mind. After
you adorn your own Tathagata, sentient beings who have heard of your teachings or
have been enlightened due to your help will be born to your Buddha land.
Numerous sentient beings will thus wish to be born in your Buddha land. Their
eighth vijnana will coordinate with your eighth vijnana to naturally form a new
Buddha world. Hence, a single person alone cannot become a Buddha because a Buddha
land (world) cannot be established. In other words, you can form a Buddha world
through your own tathagatagarbha together with the tathagatagarbhas of numerous
other sentient beings who have karmic connections with you; only then can you
accomplish Buddhahood.
